Raising Your Grandchildren

There are a number of reasons a grandparent must open their home to their grandchildren. Death, divorce, incarceration, drugs, finances, are some of the reasons, but there are many more. No matter what the reason, love and security are the stable foundations needed for a grandchild’s healthy development and success in life. How difficult is it for a grandparent to raise their preschool grandchild? Let’s examine some of the major obstacles.

Age Difference

Though the evolution of medicines and technological advantages keep us living longer, the difference in age must be dealt with. To maintain your top game, you must feed the body and mind. As your body ages, you must compensate and take measured steps to keep feeling your best. With your doctors approval, begin taking a multiple vitamin, and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. A fresh diet will give you the additional energy you need to feel your best to the end of the day. Drink enough water to keep hydrated. Water is an important factor in mental clarity and critical thinking. Get in the habit of carrying some with you when you leave the house.

Patience Gets Shorter

Raising young grandchildren will stretch whatever patience you have left to its limit. It’s one of the most important qualities to maintain and develop. Like other qualities, it becomes easier through practice. One trick to growing patience is to tell yourself you are patient. The simple act of saying ‘I am patient’, tricks the mind into actually believing it. As we age, we must constantly remind ourselves that we are still the loving patient parents we once were. Practice calming yourself, by listening to yourself breathe. Do this when you are alone. This small habit will keep you calm when things get hectic.

Finances Are Tight

Many grandparents find themselves raising their grandchildren on fixed incomes. Lobbying efforts in some states may alleviate some of these pressures, but for many, relief may be hard to find. Adjusting to additional expenses on a fixed income requires planning, sacrifice, and lots of creativity. There are grandparenting organizations being formed nationwide addressing parenting issues for grandparents. Find out if one is available in your area and join. Sharing ideas and solutions helps considerably. Prioritize your needs, including some fun activities near the top. Be creative and substitute time spent together fishing and laughing to going shopping for nonessentials.

Keeping a light heart and realizing the importance of your role as parent will keep things in perspective when you’re feeling tired and alone. Remember to reach out whenever possible, and become involved in the community, church and school activities as your time allows. Your grandchildren will thank you.
